Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to observe whether older adults attending community centres were meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines.

Study design: Observational study METHODS: Older adults attending community programs in London, Ontario, wore activity monitors to determine whether older adults were meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines. Data were collected on aerobic, strength, and balance activity, as well as sedentary behavior and sleep from February- June 2024.

Results: 70 older adults participated in this study; mean age was 73.6 (SD= 5.9) and 57 female and 13 males. While most participants met or exceeded aerobic activity recommendations, engagement in strength and balance activities remained below guideline targets.

Conclusions: Additional efforts are needed to enhance strength and balance training in community programs. Future work should explore scalable implementation strategies and address barriers to participation, particularly among less active older adults.
